Island Cup with the kids!
Firstly this event is likely best enjoyed without the kids at all, however if you can’t find a sitter or think your kid would love to see the trucks/races it can be done but here’s some Mom pointers to make sure you’re prepared and it’s a fun time!
-Think “off road”, you will likely get dirty and be hiking and scampering a bit. You want to be nimble. Forgo the camp chairs (unless you’re camping!) and plan to be mobile. A small throw blanket is better for seating if you really don’t want to sit on the ground.
- proper shoes, long sleeves, pants! The terrain is not suitable for sandals!
-small/med sized back pack with water, snacks, wipes, hats, and a toy or two. You don’t want to be carrying too much.
-Part of the course is on a pretty steep incline. If you aren’t feeling like playing billy goat through other spectators there is an unmarked side logging road that is only a 5 minute walk to the top just ask.
-for safety a child carrier back pack or leash system is recommended for younger kids who aren’t old enough to be solid listeners or aren’t fully physically capable (under age 4)
-depending on the weather hat, sunscreen, bug spray etc. Bandanas to tie on face to screen dust are handy if it’s hot and dry.
-Stay alert of the course and potential mishaps. This is NOT a controlled (speedway/racetrack) environment.
Trucks will roll, dirt and rocks will be kicked up by tires. Small kids are less visible to drivers who are focused on completing the course. If in doubt MOVE. (I kept my crew parallel to or above the top of the course)
-Likely no cell service.
-Bring cash in case.
-There will be open booze and likely some swearing.
-No running water. Port a potties only. Washrooms/garbages rare.
